Research from the School of Nursing at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) identified generational differences in views on nursing management competencies, revealing a gap that impacts nurse retention. Young nurses prioritize work-life balance and are hesitant to pursue managerial roles due to the increased workload without corresponding compensation, while Baby Boomers are more willing to sacrifice personal time for career advancement. Generation X and Millennials show a preference for using technology, like mobile apps, for communication, suggesting hospital administrators could adopt these tools to improve engagement across generations. These findings, presented at the International Council of Nurses Congress, aim to guide hospital administrators in developing effective retention strategies to address the manpower shortage in nursing.
