Triboelectric Nanogenerator to Produce Electricity from Rain
Device to Generate Electricity from Raindrops, Ocean Waves
Tags: IIT Delhi, India, Energy & Environment, Science & Exploration
IIT Delhi researchers have developed a device that generates electricity from water drops, raindrops, water streams, and ocean waves using the Triboelectric Effect and Electrostatic Induction. This "Liquid-solid Interface Triboelectric Nanogenerator" uses nanocomposite polymers and contact electrodes to produce a few milliwatts of power, enough to power small devices like watches and healthcare sensors. It outperforms conventional methods like the piezoelectric effect in electricity generation. Applications include powering small electronic devices and sensors. The device has been highlighted for its efficiency and simplicity in design, with research supported by MeitY and DST.
