Sustainable Road Subgrades with Industrial Byproduct
RoyAl - Pavement Subgrade from Industrial Byproducts
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Industrial Automation & Manufacturing, Construction & Smart Cities
The RoyAl technology utilizes bauxite residues (BRs), an industrial byproduct from alumina production, to prepare subgrades for road and pavement construction. By stabilizing BRs with a binder, the composite material replaces natural soils, offering a sustainable alternative for road networks amid raw material scarcity. Demonstrated at Vedanta Alumina Refineries and Utkal Alumina in Odisha, the pilot-scale technology has proven its technical and environmental feasibility. Applications include rural and urban road construction, reducing industrial waste and environmental pollution. This innovation promotes sustainable infrastructure development while minimizing dependency on natural resources.
