A study by HKMU revealed only 7.2% of people understand “surplus food” as safe, unexpired leftovers, showing a need for more education on this resource. Applications include promoting a food-wise culture, increasing donations, and reducing food waste. Findings showed that a lack of information and accessible donation points deterred surplus food donations, with only 20% of respondents willing to donate excess food. Recommendations include increasing public awareness of surplus food definitions and setting up more collection points. HKMU aims to foster food conservation through education, supporting a sustainable and waste-conscious community.
