IIT Madras has developed an automated steering rack centering system that simplifies aligning the steering column during automobile assembly. The system uses a handheld tool with an electronic control unit (ECU) to center the steering rack automatically, reducing operator error and assembly time. Applications include cars, heavy-duty vehicles, off-road vehicles, and even ships or airplanes with symmetric steering mechanisms. This innovation eliminates manual dependency, prevents damage to the clock spring, and enhances production efficiency. A patent (IN 383113) has been granted for this technology, demonstrating its unique value proposition.
