Space Weathering Insights for Improved Spacecraft Durability
Probing the Effects of Interplanetary Space on Asteroid Ryugu
Tags: Hokkaido University, Japan, Science & Exploration, Electronics & Robotics
Researchers from Hokkaido University, in collaboration with other institutions, analyzed samples from asteroid Ryugu, revealing significant insights into the effects of space weathering on its surface. They used electron holography to examine structural and magnetic properties, observing magnetite particles with stable magnetic domains and iron nanoparticles formed by micrometeoroid impacts. This technology can be applied to better understand the solar system’s magnetic field and improve the interpretation of remote sensing data. The study also highlights potential applications in estimating space dust impacts on spacecraft. The long-term goal is to further study the effects of space environments on airless celestial bodies.
