Smart Shape Memory Polymer for Creaseless, Adaptive Textiles
Shape Memory Polymers for Designing Responsive Textiles
Tags: IIT Delhi, India, Consumer Goods & Services, Healthcare & Lifesciences
A temperature-regulated shape memory polyurethane (SMP) polymer has been developed for smart textiles, enabling creaseless fabrics and responsive textile applications. Unlike conventional methods that release formaldehyde or degrade over time, this SMP has a human body transition temperature (25°C) and retains its properties for up to three years. It offers excellent mechanical strength, high elongation, and increased adhesion to various textile fibers. Applications include self-fitting masks, biomedical sutures, prosthetics, and dynamic aesthetic textiles. A lab-scale prototype has been tested, demonstrating strong shape memory performance and thermal stability.
