Safely Extract Silver from Rice Without Waste
Method for Accumulation of Silver by Rice and Possible Metal Extraction by Agriculture
Tags: IIT Madras, India, Agriculture & Food, Science & Exploration
This innovation presents a method for accumulating and extracting silver from the Garib-sal rice variety, which can amass up to 15.61 mg/kg of silver, a significant increase compared to typical concentrations in crops. The process involves growing the rice in metal-rich soil and extracting silver from the bran post-harvest, with no loss to foodstuff. This method offers a bio-amplified approach to extractive metallurgy, utilizing the rice's natural ability to concentrate silver in its aleuronic layer, detectable by nano SIMS.
