Researchers at Hokkaido University identified 341 molecular species of lipids in four types of herbal teas, revealing the potential health benefits of these compounds. The lipids include short-chain fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (SFAHFAs), which were previously unknown in plants, and poly-unsaturated fatty acids like α-linolenic and arachidonic acid. These lipids may contribute to anti-inflammatory, gut health, and other medicinal effects. The findings open new possibilities for exploring the role of lipids in herbal teas for human health and nutrition. Future research will focus on more varieties of herbal tea to further investigate these compounds.
