Researchers have discovered HKDC1, a protein vital for maintaining mitochondria and lysosomes, helps in preventing cellular aging. HKDC1, targeted by TFEB, becomes active under organelle stress, aiding in mitophagy and lysosomal repair. It interacts with TOM20 for mitochondrial maintenance and VDACs for lysosome recovery. This dual role of HKDC1 in both organelles offers potential therapies for aging-related diseases.
