Mixed Wettability Solar Still Cover Boosts Freshwater Output
Mix Wettability Surface on Solar Still Cover for Freshwater Productivity Enhancement
Tags: Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, Energy & Environment
This technology enhances freshwater production in solar stills using a mixed wettability surface on the condensing cover. By applying a water-based silicone coating to specific areas of the glass cover, the wettability of the surface is optimized for better condensation and collection. Laboratory experiments demonstrated the highest freshwater output with 30% coated surface area, while coating more than 50% increased thermal resistance. This technology can be applied in solar desalination systems for sustainable water production. The solution is cost-effective with significant improvements in productivity compared to bare glass covers.
