Magnetic-Assisted Green Hydrogen Production at Lower Costs
Rapid, Low-Cost Hydrogen Production Using Magnets
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Energy & Environment
This technology enhances the energy efficiency of water electrolysis for green hydrogen production by integrating a weak magnetic field and earth-abundant catalysts. These innovations reduce energy consumption by 20% and triple hydrogen production rates, lowering costs to INR 250/kg, with the potential to achieve INR 150/kg with large-scale adoption. Applications include providing cost-effective green hydrogen for industries like steel manufacturing, reducing dependence on polluting, non-renewable sources. A lab-scale proof of concept has been successfully demonstrated, with industry support needed for prototyping and commercial validation. The technology, led by Prof. Chandramouli Subramaniam, is expected to position India as a leader in green hydrogen production, supporting national renewable energy goals.
