Lightweight Fuel Cells for Efficient Green Mobility
Lightweight Fuel Cell Stacks for Light-Duty Vehicles
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Energy & Environment, Transportation & Automotive
Researchers have developed lightweight fuel cell stacks for light-duty vehicles by replacing conventional graphite bipolar plates with metallic ones, significantly reducing system weight and volume. The fuel cell stack is coupled with a Balance of Plant (BoP) and a gas distribution system, optimizing gravimetric and volumetric power densities for electric drive trains powered by hydrogen. The system has been tested in the lab and is being prepared for retrofitting into electric vehicles. Applications include replacing internal combustion engines in light-duty vehicles to promote green mobility. This innovation aligns with India’s efforts to advance hydrogen-based technologies for sustainable transportation, with a patent currently in process.
