A microbial consortium has been developed to biologically upgrade heavy crude oil by transforming asphaltenes under mild conditions. This process reduces viscosity by 91% in 14 days and removes up to 80% of nitrogen and sulfur, making the oil cleaner. Unlike chemical methods, it operates at low temperature and pressure while maintaining the fuel’s calorific value. Applications include petroleum biotechnology for improving the flow characteristics of heavy crude. The technology has been developed at a lab scale, with successful biotransformation and characterization studies.
