Indigenous Low-Cost Membranes for High-Performance Dialysis
Indigenous Membrane Cartridges for Hemodialysis
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Healthcare & Lifesciences
Researchers have developed novel, indigenous hemodialysis membrane cartridges that offer high uremic toxin removal efficiency, superior permeation flux, and minimal side reactions at a low cost. These membranes are compatible with human blood and outperform commercial alternatives, providing a cost-effective solution for dialysis. Applications include replacing expensive imported dialysis cartridges and meeting India's growing demand for affordable hemodialysis solutions. The technology aims to reduce dependence on foreign imports, making dialysis accessible to a larger population, especially in a country with a high prevalence of diabetes and kidney diseases. Preliminary results show promising performance, and animal trials are underway to ensure readiness for human application.
