Implant Closely Mimics Natural Bone Properties
A Biomimetic Composite for Orthopedic and Dental Implants and Method of Fabricating the Same
Tags: BITS Pilani, India, Healthcare & Lifesciences
The innovation involves a biomimetic composite for orthopedic and dental implants that closely mimics natural bone properties, offering enhanced biocompatibility and bioactivity. This material, with a Young's modulus of 7 GPa, includes hydroxyapatite for bioactivity and other biocompatible constituents, making it a superior alternative to existing biomaterials. The inventors are from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology and Science - Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus. Applications include dental and orthopedic implants, where the composite's properties are crucial. Patent is pending, and proof-of-concept is available, with preliminary material testing completed.
