Advocating for a Dementia-Inclusive Visual Communication

This study examines how visual communication strategies represent dementia in public imagery and advocates for dementia-inclusive depictions. By analyzing 432 images from various sources, the research highlights that most portray dementia as a loss, with stigmatizing images and abstractions like brain degeneration and missing puzzle pieces. The study emphasizes the need for more person-centered images that depict individuals living with dementia while acknowledging the necessity of certain images for public education. Applications include reshaping public perceptions of dementia through empowering and empathetic visuals in media and advocacy materials. The study offers guidelines for organizations to choose images that balance empowerment with educational goals.
