High-Performance, Sustainable and Cost Effective Na-Ion Battery Systems
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Energy & Environment, Transportation & Automotive
Researchers are developing high-performance sodium-ion battery systems that are cost-effective, sustainable, and suitable for heavy-duty applications like electric vehicles. The technology uses water-stable cathode and anode materials, enabling aqueous processing, which eliminates the need for toxic chemicals like NMP and PVDF in electrode preparation. These Na-ion batteries offer superior energy density, power density, and safety compared to existing systems, while being environmentally and health-friendly. Prototypes are being developed in collaboration with companies to replace or supplement Li-ion batteries, especially in regions with abundant sodium resources like India. This innovation supports renewable energy storage and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, fostering sustainability and energy independence.
