Autonomous Rail Crack Detection Robot for Safer Railways
Artemis - Railroad Crack Detection Robot
Tags: IIT Madras, India, Transportation & Automotive, Electronics & Robotics
IIT Madras has developed Artemis, a railroad crack detection robot that autonomously inspects railway tracks for defects using ultrasonic, infrared, and eddy current sensors. The robot moves along the inner portion of tracks without disrupting train operations and transmits real-time data on detected cracks for timely repairs. It eliminates manual inspections, improving safety and efficiency in railway maintenance. Applications include railway infrastructure monitoring to prevent derailments and costly accidents. The technology has been validated in laboratory conditions and has a granted patent (IN 460037).
